AWS Import Service (CreateJob Request)

With AWS Import Service , your files will be uploaded from your portable Storage device to an   Amazon S3 Bucket as S3 Objects, using an Import Job created by you. Once the device is loaded to your Bucket, the file system in your device is mounted on an AWS Import/Export loading data station where each file is uploaded in your Bucket as an object. Here, you can also manage directories and filenames.

You can submit the Import Job by sending CreateJob Request to AWS. You can send the CreateJob Request in two ways:

  1. Submit Import Job using S3 REST API CreateJob Request - If you are a programmer, you can write your own program to use S3 REST API CreateJob Request. We will only talk about S3 REST APIS on this website. You can read on AWS Documentation website to use SOAP APIs.
  2. Submit Import Job Using Bucket Explorer UI - If you do not want to write code, you can simply create an import job with mouse clicks using Bucket Explorer Interface, without having to write any code.

Amazon S3 Import Process

  1. Copy your data to your storage device.
  2. Create an that contains 20-character accessKeyId and 40-character secretKey of your AWS account.
  3. Create an Import manifest file.
  4. Sending a CreateJob request that includes the manifest file.
Steps in Sending a CreateJob Request Using REST API
  1. Create a manifest file using a text editor
  2. URL encode the manifest file.
  3. Sign the request.
  4. Send the request specifying JobType = Import .

  5. AWS Import sends a response that includes a job ID, signature value and AWS shipping address and saves a SIGNATURE file to your computer.
  6. Copy the saved SIGNATURE file to the root directory of your storage device.
  7. Fill out AWS Import/Export packing slip and send to the address provided in the CreateJob response.
  8. AWS Import/Export validates the SIGNATURE on the root of your storage device.
  9. Your storage device will be repacked and shipped to the return shipping address provided in your manifest file.
AWS Import Service using Bucket Explorer

Bucket Explorer supports AWS Import service to create job for importing data into Amazon S3 Buckets in the US West (Oregon), US West (Northern California), EU (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Singapore) Regions from storage device using Amazon's high-speed internal network and bypassing the internet.

When your package arrives, it will be processed and securely transferred to an AWS data center. After the data load is completed, the device will be returned to you.

Steps for Using AWS Import:

STEP 1: You copy your data to your storage device. Make sure the file paths correspond to the key names that you want to use in Amazon S3. For example, if you want your Amazon S3 key to start with images/, place your files in a directory called images for content delivery.

STEP 2: Create an Import Job with manifest details that specifies things such as Bucket name, device Id, erase device, returns address, ACL, key prefix, etc.

Create Manifest file for AWS Import Steps to create import job:
  1. Run Bucket Explorer.
  2. Open Add-Ins -> AWS Import Export option.
  3. It will open import export job window.
  4. Choose Create button from toolbar.
  5. It will open a wizard to create Import-Export job. Choose job type as AWS Import and click on Next.
  1. Fill in General Details and click Next to fill in Manifest Details and move to the next step.
  2. Next step takes you to enter Return Address and click on Next button to enter optional fields.
  3. If you want to add any additional fields, click on Optional Fields.
  4. In the last step, you will see Preview of Manifest Details.
  5. If you want to save your manifest details on local, check the corresponding checkbox to save on local.
  6. Click on Create Job button. As Import Job is successfully created and you have checked to save manifest on local, the two files Manifest and SIGNATURE are saved on your local machine at specified path.

STEP 3: Copy the SIGNATURE file from the path that you have configured in AWS option to the root directory of your storage device. In case you have lost your saved SIGNATURE file or you don't know the exact path, you can again save the SIGNATURE file for our selected job.

Steps to Save the SIGNATURE file:
  1. Select your Job from the listing of Import-Export jobs.
  2. Right click on the selected job and choose the option "Get Status".
  3. It will open the Job Statistics panel.
  4. Click on "Save Signature File" button and select the path where you want to save the file.
  5. Now you can copy this saved SIGNATURE file.

STEP 4: Fill out and print the AWS Import/Export packing slip. AWS accepts only one device per package and only one job per device.

Generate Packing Slip Steps to Generate Packing Slip and print the AWS Import packing slip:
  1. Select the created job from list table job and choose Generate Packing Slip option from right click menu.
  2. Enter Packing Slip Details and Job Details .
  3. Click on Generate Slip button to view preview.
  4. You can print the packing slip from preview.

STEP 5: Now ship your storage device and packing slip to AWS Shipping Address . Make sure to include your job Id on the shipping label. Otherwise, AWS will refuse delivery of the package at the import facility.

How to find AWS Shipping Address for your Import job:
  1. Select the created job from list job table and choose Get Status option from right click menu.
  2. It will show status of job.
  3. Here you will find the AWS shipping address.
  4. You can preview the content of Manifest file from Show Manifest button
