Amazon S3 - Glacier Storage Class

In uploading files from local to Amazon S3, you cannot specify GLACIER as the Storage Class. Instead, when an Object reached the end of its lifetime on the specified date or time period, Amazon S3 changes the Storage Class to Glacier.

To be able to set Storage class of an Object to Glacier, you may use lifecycle configuration. With Glacier Storage class, you can store data for a long period of time.

Once you apply Object Lifecycle rules for S3 Object transition to Glacier Storage Class, the Objects are listed in the S3 Bucket but not available in real time. Thus, if you want to use these objects, you have to restore it first to Amazon S3. For more details, check the link Restore Amazon Glacier Object.
