How to compare Amazon S3 files with local files and folders?

As your need of fast and accurate document comparisons makes you choose any other comparison software to compare your file(s), we have provided it now in Bucket Explorer as an exclusive feature. You can use it to compare files for all types including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, RTF, Text, HTML, XML, and more.
To compare the local file(s)/folder(s) with file(s)/folder(s) stored in Amazon S3, Bucket Explorer has two options using  Bucket Explorer Comparer  and right click menu option Compare To .

Comparison using Comparer UI

  1. Select Source: Comparer UI is divided into two same parts for selecting source. The type of sources is listed in combo box. User can get the contents of the selected source like local listing or S3 listing for saved S3 credentials.
  2. Path: Path shows the selected bucket name with remote path for S3 listing and local path for local selection.
  3. Common Toolbar : This toolbar has a collection of command like refresh, show all, common, left side only, right side only.

There are two ways to perform comparison:

  1. Compare with Name and Size:
  2. This option is used to get fast comparison result. It shows the result of comparison on the basis of file size.
  3. Compare with Name and Hash:
  4. This option compares ETAG Value of object with MD5 hash value of the selected left side files.
How to open Comparer Window from Main Panel?
  1. Go to Tools menu, select Advanced then choose Comparer option.
  2. In bucket toolbar, choose Comparer button.
  3. In object toolbar, choose Comparer
Four combination of comparison are possible:
  1. Comparison between folders (Local) and folder (S3) having the same name
  2. Comparison between folders (Local) and folder (S3) having different name.
  3. Comparison between file (Local) and object (S3) having the same name
  4. Comparison from main UI between file/folder (Local) and file/folder/bucket (S3)
    1. Comparison between folders (Local) and folder (S3) having the same name
      1. Select any option from the above choices.
      2. It will open Comparer panel.
      3. Select your Local file system from one side and S3 account from the other side in combo box options at the top of the Left Panel (Left Source) and Right Panel (Right Source).
      4. It will display a listing of drive as well as buckets on the basis of selected source type. You can explore the bucket/drive/folder by double clicking on the listed row item or you can write the correct path to explore the desired folder.
      5. Select comparison type as “Compare with Name and Size” Or “Compare with Name and Hash”.
      6. Select the folder(s) that exist in local as well as at s3 account
      7. Click on Compare Contents button exist on common toolbar.
      8. It will open Comparer Content Result window and will show the result of comparisons.
    2. Comparison between folders (Local) and folder (S3) having different name
      1. Select any option from the above choices.
      2. It will open Comparer panel.
      3. Select your Local file system from one side and S3 account from  the other side in combo box options at the top of the Left Panel (Left Source) and Right Panel (Right Source).
      4. It will display a listing of drive as well as buckets on the basis of selected source type. You can explore the bucket/drive/folder by double clicking on the listed row item or you can write the correct path to explore the desired folder.
      5. Select comparison type as “Compare with Name and Size” Or “Compare with Name and Hash”.
      6. Now select a folder from the source side. Right click and select Compare Left Side.
      7. Now select a folder from the Right side. Rright click and click on Compare to folder-name.
      8. It will open Comparer Content Result window and will show the result of comparisons. (On right click; it will apply comparison with compare contents and comparison parameter as per selection)
    3. Comparison between file (Local) and object (S3) having the same name
      1. Select any option from the above choices.
      2. It will open Comparer panel.
      3. Select your Local file system from all buckets on the basis of selected source type. You can explorer the bucket/drive/folder by double clicking on the listed row item or you can write the correct path to explore the desired folder.
      4. Select comparison type as “Compare with Name and Size” Or “Compare with Name and Hash”.
      5. Select the file(s) that exist in local as well as in S3 account
      6. Click on Compare Files button that exist in common toolbar.
      7. It will display the result of comparison on the same comparer window. It will give a very quick response of comparison even it is of name with hash or of name with size comparison.
    4. Comparison from the main UI between file/folder (Local) and object/folder/bucket (S3)
      1. Listing the bucket by logging in to any S3 account
      2. Explore the bucket and local file system
      3. Right Click on the local file/folder (left side) and click on “Select Left Side to Compare” menu option.
      4. Right Click on S3 Bucket/Folder/File (right side) and click on “Compare To” menu option. Note: Comparison is possible between file-file, folder-folder, folder-bucket and vice-versa.
      5. It will open Comparer window and by default, it will give the result of Compare Files Option, means that result will be shown on the same window.
      6. You can also compare the listed folder by selecting all and clicking on compare content button that exist in common toolbar.

Function available in Comparer window:

Comparison Type:
  1. Compare with Name and size: It is one of the two types of comparison parameter explained at the beginning of the document to compare with name and size.
  2. Compare with Name and Hash: It is one of the two types of comparison parameter explained at the beginning of the document to compare with name and hash.
Comparison Parameter Type :
  1. Compare Contents:  It is used to compare contents of selected Folder/Bucket
  2. Compare Files:  It is used to compare selected files.
Common Buttons :
  1. Here several buttons are present in toolbar at the top of comparer window such as:
    1. Refresh: Refresh the listing.
    2. Select All: Selects all the listing.
    3. Show All: Shows all files in both sides.
    4. Show common data (=): Shows all files that exist in both sides (having the same file name).
    5. Show Uncommon data (=/=): Shows all files that are missing on one side and exist on the other side.
    6. Left side only (::::): Shows all files that exist only on the Left Side (means files are missing on the Right side).
    7. Right side only (::::): Shows all files that exist only on Right Side (means files are missing on the Left side).
    8. Stop Comparison: Stops the running comparison process (while using compare contents option).
    9. Upload: Uploads selected file(s)/folder(s) to the bucket of the selected S3 account.
    10. Download: Downloads selected file(s)/folder(s) from bucket of the selected S3 account.
    11. Up:  Up the listing one step above at a time. (listing of one level up).
  2. Button available in Compare Content Result window:
    1. Common (=): Shows all files that exist in both sides and are Equal.
    2. Uncommon (=/=): Shows all files that exist in both sides and are Not Equal.
    3. Left Side Only (::::): Shows all files that exist only on the Left Side (means files are missing on Right side).
    4. Right Side Only (:::: ): Shows all files that exist only on the Right Side (mean sfiles are missing on Left side).
    5. Count: Shows the summary of comparison such as:
      1. Matched Files (total file count of Common Files)
      2. UnMatched Files (total file count of Uncommon Files)
      3. Only on left side (total file count of Left Side Files only)
      4. Only on right side (total count of Right Side Files only)
      5. Note: By double clicking on each category of compare result mentioned above, it will open the list of files as per category selected
  3. Buttons that perform the same functionality as they perform in Comparer window are:
    1. Upload
    2. Download
