How to Move Amazon S3 Bucket, Files and Folders?

This feature helps you to move S3 files from source bucket to destination bucket in the same Amazon S3 account or in different account. Using Transfer panel, you can easily move object from the source bucket to the destination bucket.If S3 files which are to be moved already exist, it will prompt you to overwrite or skip. If you select ‘overwrite’, the new file will replace the older one and older file will be copied to the  version folder of System Bucket having object name appended with current date and time.

You can also move files and folder from one account to another account.

Transfer Panel

Bucket Explorer provides a new Transfer panel to copy /move S3 Bucket and S3 Objects within the same or different account.

The following are the different options to run Transfer Panel.

  • Choose Advanced in   Tool menu and select Transfer panel .
  • Choose Transfer panel option in Bucket Tool bar .
  • Select a bucket from the bucket list and choose “Bucket -> Copy/Move” from Bucket Toolbar. This will open a new window for Transfer panel .
  • Right click on the selected S3 file(s) of the selected Bucket and choose Copy, Move & Rename -> Copy/Move .This will open a new window for Transfer panel .

Amazon S3 Bucket Move

If you want to Move a bucket into another bucket, follow the steps below:

  1. Start Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 account.
  2. Choose Bucket -> Move option in Bucket toolbar.
  3. It will open a Transfer Panel with the list of Buckets in your S3 account of Bucket Explorer Main Panel (on the left side).
  4. Now select the profile name of your saved credential from the combo box. On the right side panel, you can select the profile name of the same or of different account. Click on "Go" button and it will connect to the account and list all the buckets.
  5. Select the target/ destination bucket [2]  where you want to move the source bucket [1] .
  6. Click on move button at the middle of transfer panel.
  7. It will prompt you withe a message "You are trying to 'MOVE' Selected Files. This will move them from the Source permanently. If you want to keep files in Source and in Destination or both places, use the 'Copy' option... Do you want to continue?"
  8. Click on "YES" button if you want to move.
    Note: From here you can also move the whole bucket from the right side to the left side by clicking on right to left side red arrow button at the middle of transfer panel.
  9. It will ask for a queue option. Select your desired queue option.

  10. Move operation will start in Bucket Explorer queue window.
  11. Click on Statistics tab of queue window to see the total copied/ moved/ failed/ and pending files.
  12. See the list of successfully copied/ moved/ failed and skipped file in appropriate tab. If any operation fails, it retries automatically. By default, it retries 2 times.
  13. After completing automatic retry and there is still failed operation Retry button will be visible in Statistics panel. Click on retry button to move the failed files again.
  14. After a successful completion of Move process, close the queue window.

Amazon S3 Object Move

If you want to Move file(s)/ folder(s) of a Bucket into another bucket or into a  different folder of the same Bucket or different Amazon S3 account, follow the steps below:

  1. Start Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 account.
  2. Select the Bucket from where you want to move files.
  3. Go to the folder location from where you want to move file/folder to any bucket of any S3 account
  4. Right click on any file(s) and you will see "Copy Move & Rename" option. Click on subMenu Move option.
  5. It will open a Transfer Panel with the explored folder (remote path at main panel) of the selected bucket in your S3 account on the left side panel.
  6. Select the objects that you wants to move from left side panel.
  7. Now select the profile name of your saved credential from the combo box. On the right side panel, you can choose the profile name of the same or the different account. Click on "Go" button and it will connect to the account and list all the buckets.
  8. Select the target/ destination bucket [2] or explore your desired location in the selected Bucket where you want to move the source bucket [1]  or selected object.
  9. Click on move button at the middle of transfer panel.
  10. It will prompt you with a message "You are trying to 'MOVE' Selected Files. This will move them from the Source permanently. If you want to keep files in Source and in Destination or both places, use the 'Copy' option... Do you want to continue? "
  11. Click on "YES" button if you want to move.

  12. Move operation will start in Bucket Explorer queue window.
  13. You can see the status of process in status bar
  14. Click on Statistics tab of queue window to see the total copied/ moved/ failed and pending files.
  15. See the list of successfully copied/ moved/ failed and skipped files in appropriate tab.
  16. If any operation fails then it retries automatically. By default, it retries 2 times.
