How to Move Amazon S3 Bucket, Files and Folders?

This feature helps you to move S3 files from source bucket to destination bucket in the same Amazon S3 account or different account.Using Transfer panel you can easily move object from source bucket to destination bucket.If S3 files which are to be moved, already exist then it will prompt to overwrite or skip, here if you select ‘overwrite’ then the new file will replace the older one and older file will be copied to version folder of System Bucket having object name appended with current date and time.

Transfer Panel: Bucket Explorer provides a new Transfer panel for copy /move S3 Bucket and S3 Objects within same or different acccount.

Following are the different options to run Transfer Panel.

  • Choose Advanced from Tool menu & select Transfer panel .
  • Choose Transfer panel option from Bucket Tool bar .
  • Select a bucket from bucket list and choose “Bucket -> Copy/Move” from Bucket Toolbar.This will open a new window for Transfer panel .
  • Right click on selected S3 file(s) of selected Bucket, choose Copy, Move & Rename -> Copy/Move .This will open a new window for Transfer panel .
Amazon S3 Bucket Move : If you want to Move a bucket into another bucket, follow the steps below:
  1. Start the Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 account.
  2. Choose Bucket -> Move option from Bucket toolbar.
  3. It will open a Transfer Panel with the list of Buckets of your logged in S3 account of Bucket Explorer Main Panel (in left side).
  4. Now select the profile name of your saved credential from combo box on right side panel you can choose profile name of same or different account. Click on "Go" button, it will connect to the account and list all the buckets.
  5. Select the target/ destination bucket [2] in which you want to move the source bucket [1] .
  6. Click on move button at the middle of transfer panel.
  7. It will prompt you a message "You are trying to 'MOVE' Selected Files. This will move them from Source permanently. If you want to keep files at Source and Destination both places, use the 'Copy' option... Do you want to continue?"
  8. Click on "YES" button, if you want to move.
    Note: From here you can also move whole bucket from right side to left side by clicking on right to left side red arrow button at middle of transfer panel. .
  9. It will ask for queue option, select desired queue option.

  10. Move operation will be started in Bucket Explorer queue window.
  11. Click on Statistics tab of queue window to see total copied/ moved/ failed/ and pending files.
  12. See the list of successfully copied/ moved/ failed and skipped file in appropriate tab. If any operation failed then it retries automatically by default 2 times.
  13. After completing automatic retry if any failed operation is still there then Retry button will be visible on Statistics panel, click on retry button to move the failed files again.
  14. After successful completion of Move process close the queue window.
Amazon S3 Object Move : If you want to Move file(s)/ folder(s) of a Bucket into another bucket or in different folder of same Bucket or different Amazon S3 account, follow the steps below :
  1. Start the Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 account.
  2. Select Bucket from which you want to move files.
  3. Reach at the folder location from where you want to move file/folder to any bucket of any s3 account
  4. Right click on any file(s) and you will see "Copy Move & Rename" option, click on subMenu Move option.
  5. It will open a Transfer Panel with the the explored folder (remote path at main panel) of selected bucket in your S3 account on left side panel.
  6. Select objects from left side panel, those you want to move.
  7. Now select the profile name of your saved credential from combo box on right side panel you can choose profile name of same or different account. Click on "Go" button, it will connect to the account and list all the buckets.
  8. Select the target/ destination bucket [2] or explore desired location in selected Bucket in which you want to move the source bucket [1]   selected object.
  9. Click on move button at the middle of transfer panel.
  10. It will prompt you a message "You are trying to 'MOVE' Selected Files. This will move them from Source permanently. If you want to keep files at Source and Destination both places, use the 'Copy' option... Do you want to continue? "
  11. Click on "YES" button, if you want to move.
