How to Update Amazon S3 Metadata in Batch/ Bulk?

Bucket Explorer provides a new feature to update Metadata of files in bulk. Using this feature, you can update (Add, Edit and Delete) Metadata for all the objects of a bucket or all selected objects. The process of updating Metadata is performed in queue , so you can see statistics of the process . You can also change the Storage-Class while Adding or Editing the Metadata for bulk objects.
 
There are two ways to update Amazon S3 Metadata in bulk/ batch:
  1. Update Metadata for All Objects of Selected Bucket
    1. Run Bucket Explorer as usual.
    2. All the buckets are listed.
    3. Now select a bucket for which you want to update Metadata.
    4. Then perform following steps as mentioned for “Add Metadata”, “Edit Metadata” and “Delete Metadata”.
  2. Update Metadata for Selected Objects.
    1. Run Bucket Explorer as usual.
    2. All the buckets are listed.
    3. Now select a bucket for which you want to update Metadata, select more than one objects from object list table.
    4. Then perform following steps as mentioned for “Add Metadata”, “Edit Metadata” and “Delete Metadata”.

Add Metadata:
Following are the steps to add Metadata -

  1. Click on the ‘Batch Operation’ icon on the Bucket’s toolbar or Object’s toolbar and then click on the Add Metadata option.
  2. A dialog box having title “Add Metadata :< Selected Bucket Name>” is appeared on the screen.
  3. Click on Add button.
  4. A new window appears.
  5. Write the value of Key in its field.
  6. Enter the value of Value in its field. If you want to set the Value as name of the file, then enter the keyword {$$file_name_without_path_$$} as it is in the text box corresponding to the Value.
  7. Click on Ok button. The Key & its value get added as a row on the window of Update Metadata.
  8. If you click on Cancel then no row will be added.
  9. If you click on the Remove button, then the row will be deleted.
  10. If you check the check box to set as bucket default for new objects, it means that you are setting these key and value as a default setting for all the objects which will be uploaded in this particular bucket only.
  11. If you check the Overwrite Metadata option, it means the value will be overwritten for the corresponding existing key.
  12. Click on the Add Metadata button, a queue will be started with all the objects of the specified bucket. When the queue gets finished, it shows the statistics report for the success and failed process.
  13. Now click on the refresh button of the Objects toolbar and select any object and see the properties of that object. All the metadata you have added will be appeared in the related object’s property .
  14. Click on the Link “Set as bucket default for new objects”, it will redirect you on the page “ How to set/edit and remove default custom Header ”.

Edit Metadata:
Following are the steps to edit Metadata -

  1. Click on the Batch Operation icon on the Bucket’s toolbar or Object’s toolbar and then click on the Edit Metadata option.
  2. A dialog box having title “Edit Metadata :< Selected Bucket Name>” is appeared on the screen.
  3. Click on Add button.
  4. A new window appears.
  5. Enter the existing Metadata (which you want to edit) in the key and Value field.
  6. Click on Ok button. The Key & its value get added as a row on the window of Update Metadata.
  7. If you click on Cancel then no row will be added.
  8. If you click on the Remove button, then the row will be deleted.
  9. Now click on the edit Metadata, A queue will be started with all the objects of the specified bucket. When the queue gets finished, it shows the statistics report for the success and failed process.
  10. Now click on the refresh button of the object’s toolbar and select an object.
  11. Right click and see object properties.
  12. All the Metadata you have edited will be appeared with edited value in the related object’s property.

Delete Metadata:
Following are the steps to delete Metadata -

  1. Select a bucket and click on the “Batch Operation” icon on the Bucket’s toolbar or Object’s toolbar and then click on the Edit Metadata option.
  2. A dialog box having title “Delete Metadata :< Selected Bucket Name>” is appeared on the screen.
  3. Click on Add button.
  4. A new window appears.
  5. Enter the existing Metadata (which you want to delete) in the key and Value field.
  6. Click on Ok button. The Key & its value get added as a row on the window of Update Metadata.
  7. If you click on Cancel then no row will be added.
  8. If you click on the Remove button, then the row will be deleted.
  9. Now click on the delete Metadata, A queue will be started with all the objects of the specified bucket. When the queue finishes, it shows the statistics report for the success and failed process.

Set Storage-Class as RRS (Reduced Redundancy Storage) :

  • Enable the check box named Use reduced Redundancy Storage . It will set the Storage class to REDUCED_REDUNDANCY for that object.
  • To change the storage class to STANDARD , you need to disable the same check box.

Set Metadata as Bucket Default :

  • Enable the check box named Set as Bucket Default for new Object . It will set the supplied metadata information as default metadata on the bucket.

Now click on the refresh button of the Objects toolbar and select any object and see the properties of that object. All the Metadata you have deleted will not be appeared in the related object’s property.
