Set default ACL Permissions and Metadata while Uploading Amazon S3 Objects

Set Default is an exclusive feature of Bucket Explorer that lets you set default Metadata and ACL on uploading objects. This feature allows user to automatically set default ACL permissions and Metadata on new uploading objects.

Bucket Default ACL : This feature helps you to set default Amazon S3 ACLs for all the files of the specified bucket and to edit and remove existing default ACL permissions. Once you have set default ACL on any Bucket, it will be applied on each of the next uploading S3 files automatically.

Set default Metadata option helps you to set default custom header or user Metadata for all the files of the specified Amazon S3 bucket and to edit and remove existing default custom header/ user Metadata. Once you set default on any Bucket, it will be applied on each of the uploading S3 files automatically. You can also set the Storage-Class while setting the Bucket default and it will set the Storage-Class to REDUCED_REDUNDANCY for all the objects that will be uploaded into the same bucket.

If you want to set default ACL permissions and Metadata on Amazon S3 bucket, follow the steps below:

  1. Start Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 Account .
  2. Select desired bucket for which you want to set default ACL and Metadata.
  3. Right click on desired bucket and choose Bucket Default option or choose Default option from bucket tool bar.
  4. Click on Set Default.
  5. To Add ACL -
    • A window for set Default will be seen having two panels to set Default ACL and Default Metadata on bucket. OR
    • You can also make private S3 files ( private ACL setting is set by default ) by clicking on Make Private button .OR
    • You can change ACLs according to your requirement by simply checking or un-checking the check-box.
  1. To Add Metadata -
    • In the middle panel, there are two buttons to Add and Remove Metadata.
    • Click on " Add " to add new Default Custom Header.
    • Enter Key and Value .
    • Set the value of the check box named Use Reduced Redundancy Storage in the lower panel to true if you want to set the storage class for all the objects that will be uploaded into the specified Bucket.
    • Click " OK " and then " Save ".
  2. Click on Save button.
  3. You will see a bucketexplorerbucketdefault_$bucketname$.xml in object listing.

If you want to Edit default ACL permissions and Metadata on Amazon S3 bucket, follow the steps below:

  1. Start Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 Account .
  2. Select desired bucket for which you want to update default ACL and Metadata.
  3. Right click on the desired bucket and choose Bucket Default option or choose Default option from bucket tool bar.
  4. Click on Edit Default.
  5. It will prompt you with "Are you sure you want to Edit the bucket default settings: $Bucket Name$" with "YES" and "NO" button.
  6. Now click on " YES " to edit default.
  7. A window to Edit Default will be seen having three panels to edit Default ACL, Metadata and Storage Policy panel on Bucket. This window shows existing Default ACLs and Metadata.
  8. To update ACL – Make desired update on existing ACL.
  9. To update Metadata -
    • In the middle panel, there are two buttons to Add and Remove Metadata.
    • Click on " Add " to add new Default Custom Header.
    • Enter Key and Value .
    • Set the value of the check box named Use Reduced Redundancy Storage in the lower panelto true if you want to set the storage class for all the objects that will be uploaded in the specified Bucket.
    • Click " OK " and then " Save ".
  10. Click on Save button to save edit default.
  11. You will see a bucketexplorerbucketdefault_$bucketname$.xml in object listing.

If you want to Remove default ACL permissions and Metadata on Amazon S3 bucket, follow the steps below:

  1. Start Bucket Explorer and connect with your Amazon S3 Account .
  2. Select the desired bucket for which you want to remove default ACL and Metadata.
  3. Right click on desired bucket and choose Bucket Default option or choose Default option from bucket tool bar.
  4. Click on Remove Default.
  5. It will prompt you with "Are you sure, you want to remove the bucket default settings: $Bucket Name$ " with "YES" and "NO" button.
  6. Click on " YES " to remove default. This will remove Default metadata and ACL setting from bucket
  7. You will see a bucketexplorerbucketdefault_$bucketname$.xml in object listing and will also be removed.
