CloudFront - How to Delete Private Distribution (DELETE Distribution with Origin Access Identity and AWS Trusted signers)?

In AWS CloudFront, your data is organized into Distributions . You can create Private Distribution to register your Origin Server ( Amazon S3 Bucket where your S3 Objects are stored) with CloudFront. If you want to Delete a CloudFront Distribution, you can send a DELETE HTTP Request to the AWS Server, along with other necessary information. You can send the Delete Request to the AWS Server in one of the two ways:

a) Delete CloudFront Private Distribution with CloudFront API- DELETE Distribution - If you know software programming, you can write your own code, to use AWS CloudFront supported API- DELETE distribution in your code to delete CloudFront Distribution.

b) Delete CloudFront Private Distribution using Bucket Explorer- You can delete CloudFront Distribution using Bucket Explorer User Interface if you do not want to get involved with writing  software code.

1. Delete CloudFront Private Distribution Using REST API- DELETE Distribution

To delete a private distribution using CloudFront API

  • Submit a GET Distribution Config request to get the current configuration. (We have written about Get distribution request in update distribution.)
  • Update the XML document that returned in the response to GET Distribution Config request and change the value of Enabled to false.
  • Submit a PUT Distribution Config request to update distribution. (We have written about PUT distribution request in update distribution.)
  • As distribution gets deployed, submit a DELETE Distribution request to delete distribution.

DELETE /2012-07-01/distribution/ distribution ID HTTP/1.1
If-Match: value from ETag header in previous GET or PUT response
Authorization: AWS authentication string
Date: time stamp
Other required headers

2. Delete CloudFront Private Download Distribution using Bucket Explorer:

  1. Run Bucket Explorer.
  2. Choose "Distribution" icon from Bucket table toolbar or you can do the same by right clicking on any bucket and then click on "Manage Distribution" option.

  4. To delete distribution, select a particular distribution from List distribution table and click on "Delete" icon from toolbar of List distribution window.
  5. It opens new window to delete distribution, which shows information like domain name, bucket name, Enabled/Disabled, CNAME and Comment associated with that distribution.
  6. Now click on "Delete" button to delete distribution.
  7. If you are trying to delete distribution which is enabled, you will get a message as "Distribution needs to be disabled. Disable distribution by un-checking ‘Enable Distribution’ option".
    1. Delete button toggles with "Update" button, clicking on which can disable that distribution.
    2. After updating distribution you need to wait till distribution gets status "Deployed" in place of "In Progress".
    3. When you get status "Deployed" you can delete this distribution using step 4.
    4. You can also use update feature to disable distribution.
