September Public Beta Release

On-line support for Bucket Explorer for Amazon S3

September Public Beta Release

Postby saurabh on Fri Sep 28, 2007 3:17 pm

We have completed the development on all the feature requests that we received during the month of August. We plan to spend next 10-15 days in testing this release and a generally available version is expected by October 15th. Mean while, if you wish to try out the beta, here is the link:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.buck ... .28.Be.exe

Please remember that this is a beta version and if you are looking for a stable release, you should use the August version available on download page: http://www.bucketexplorer.com/be-download.html

We will be adding documentation and release notes on what's changed in this release, but here are the main points:

1. Paging -> For buckets with several thousand files, now all the "bucket listing" operations are done with paging. We will add some more details about this in documentation as it can be confusing to not see all the objects at once.
2. Chunking -> ACL updates & deletes are now done in chunks for better performance with large buckets.
3. Better Folder / File tree for local files.
4. Proxy Support -> This is the one, where we can sure help from beta test.
5. ACL updates will now only update an ACL if the new ACL is different.

Edit - If you have used an earlier version of Bucket Explorer or any other tool, which did not create _$Folder for the folders, you need to click on Tools - create virtual folders for backward compatibility.

There are many more changes in this release, for which we will be adding release notes early next week.

Thanks
Saurabh

I just downloaded the new beta and my subfolders (subdirectories or Subbuckets or whatever) are now not displaying.

I just edited my post above to inform how to fix that. In the original, August release, we decided not to create a dummy folder by name _$foldername in each directory and calculated folder structure at the run time. This was a slow operation for large buckets. So, in Sept release, we have started adding _$foldername object and if that is present, then it makes the listing faster. For backward compatibility, you will have to click on Tools - "create virtual folders for backward compatibility". This is a one time operation and you will never have to do this again.

Thanks for jumping in to try the beta.

OK. Does this do anything different to the actual S3 stored data? That is, if I need to go back to the earlier version of BE will I still be able to access my subfolders on S3 after creating virtual folders?

It just adds a dummy file called _$foldername. It will NOT change any of the existing files. Once you click on this option, if you use the older version of Bucket Explorer, you will be able to see this dummy file along with the original files.

Woohoo, uploading to subdirs work perfectly.

I definitely like being able to switch between file and folder listings.

Perhaps in future versions you can let us paste the path into the Local Path: textbox so we can access a folder quicker than having to go through the trees.

I love that the 4 new buttons were shifted down to the remote path "subwindow"

Do you think next time you could add a "raw view" so we can see how the files are arranged including the _$folder$ files? Just a thought.

Anyways, I'm going to play around with it a bit more. Good job!

Thanks Brian,

You can already paste the local path. Its probably not obvious, but there is an input box for that (just below AWS access key input box).

You can switch between raw view and folder view there is a toggle button called "treeview" "folder structure". We can add a way to show $folder$...

Thanks again for the feedback.

Can't connect though proxy

Postby Carlton Bale on Fri Sep 28, 2007 7:58 pm

With the latest version, I can't connect through my proxy server. When I go back to view the proxy server settings, they are not what I set them to be. The first character of the proxy server name and port number are missing when I go back into the proxy config page. So instead of proxy.con port 80, I get oxy.con port 0.

Also, some proxy servers require usernames and passwords and I didn't see and option for that in Bucket Explorer. Not sure if that will be an issue for me or not, but some apps require a username/password and some do not. Not sure how the proxy determines this, but it could prevent Bucket Explorer from working in some environments.

BTW, I found that the spam filter in the forum software won't allow posting of any text containing [d o t] [c o m] anywhere in the post, regardless of whether it is a link or just text (at least until you get 10 posts.)

I can input the path i want to open in the Local Path box, but it doesn't go to it. I thought it was just as a display-only to output the location for the directory tree structure.
