Getting the URL

Postby wakewatcher on Thu Sep 13, 2007 10:27 pm

It seems to me that once I've asked for the url it should just copy it to the clipboard for me rather than opening a dialog box and asking me to do it.

Actually, This new method seems even more cumbersome than the earlier version. What I wanted was for it to automatically copy to the clipboard in one step. If I select multiple files then I guess (although I don't know why I'd use it) then it would copy all the urls to the clipboard.

Why is the new method more cumbersome then the previous one? If you ignore the automated copy to clip board for a moment, and only compare the two versions: In the earlier release, we were only showing one URL to copy, and the complete URL was not visible. In the new version we are showing all URLs in a clearly visible format. There is no extra keystorke / process involved in the new version.

Yes, it does not do what you wanted, i.e. automated copy to the clipboard but the current design is inspired by several other requirements that we got.
1. Ability to create public URLs for multiple files.
2. Ability to switch between http & https type URLs (you will see a button for that in the new design, next to the "copy" button.)
3. Ability to create URLs with virtual domain, instead of amazonaws.com. (again, you will see a button for that next to the "copy" button).

If we keep adding all these features in right click option, then there will be too many right click options. So, we have a single right click option to create a URL, and once that is clicked, the user will see all these options to format those URLs.

I do not disagree with your comments that the current system has 2 extra mouse click, but it does provide a lot more clarity to the end user who is using the system for the first time.

We have enhanced the "Get Web URL" interface in October release. There are a lot of options to generate a URL now. One can create HTTP, https, torrent, virtual host URL, Signed URLs (time limited URLs). We still plan to make it easy for copying to clipboard with one click. We will add keyboard shortcut and may be a single button in toolbar for that. We have added it to our roadmap for Nov / December timeframe.
