Moving stuff from one bucket to another

Is there a way to move stuff from one bucket to another without first dragging it my local PC? Also I'm assuming that Amazon doesn't charge for buckets. But I can see where bucket names will be coveted like domain names. :-)

There is no move or rename command / API supported by Amazon. They don't charge for buckets but you are limited to 100 buckets in your account.

This is a frustrating limitation. Given that I view BE as my 'go between' me and Amazon (else I'd just write my own BE type utility) can't you lobby them to have some sort of rename capability. Quite frustrating when you move several gigs to S3 and then want/need to change the folder name and then the only way to do so is to bring it all back to your PC rename the folder and then send it all back to S3. One could argue of course that I should get the name right the first time but it still seems silly not to have this capability.

This is one the top 3-4 features that are often requested in S3's support forums. I hope Amazon will implement it soon. In the meantime, if you have to do a lot of renames, this is what we may be able to do:

-> We add a rename button in Bucket Explorer, which will first download the file, then upload with new name and after the new upload is successful, delete the original file.

-> We create a public AMI with Fedora and install bucket explorer on it.

Once this is done, you can rename smaller files from your desktop, and if there are larger files or a lot of files, then you can start the public AMI with your own developer ID and do they renames using EC2? Amazon charges a minimum of 1 hour for an EC2 instance, so you will have to pay 10 cents everytime you boot up that AMI.
